World of Tanks is set during the World War 2 era but also encompasses the years preceding and following that infamous conflict. All of the vehicles, equipment, and environments are historically accurate and are drawn from the 1930s-1950s period. The client size comes in at a bit over 1 GB, but won’t take long to download since multiple direct download links are provided. Players sign in using their email address and don’t have to worry about character creation. All new players start with a Soviet MS-1 and a German Leichttraktor. These are light tanks and won’t put up much of a fight, but they are versatile and enough to learn the ropes. There’s no tutorial or trial round to worry about, either. Players can simply click the large red ‘Battle!’ button towards the top of the screen and get started.

Final Verdict: Good

World of Tanks is an easy to approach, tank-based shooter that has layers of depth to unravel. Quickly jump into massive 30v30 battles, or take the time to customize one of the hundreds of tanks available in World of Tanks. The game can be enjoyed in short bursts, or more competitively as part of a clan.

The F2P release saw a huge surge of players who mostly are crammed into two out of the three servers, with the Naia Euro server only having light loads. Shilen is the new server which does not allow character transfers from people who have already been playing, while Chronos was the old US server after the merge. Because of the lack of more servers and the design of the quests, if you play during the server rush expect to see HORDES of people bottlenecked into areas because there aren’t enough quest monsters for everyone to kill (Much like in Aion’s launch). Though they have just added the Magmeld server a day after launch to assist with the load.

The level cap of the game has been increased from 85 to 99 and there is now a vitality system which is similar to the “Rested” bonus in WoW, except it gives 2x exp/sp while you have points (Which are reset every weekly maintainance). Your weapons and armor will not be as hard to obtain as the “Path to awakening” system gives you rewards at certain levels and the early quests give you your equipment. Unfortunately, the grind still exists in the game and the quests are simply WoW quests that you will rarely see after level 40.

Lineage II’s only saving grace is that it had PvP that actually accomplished something. Castle sieges, territory wars, clan halls, the Olympiad and Arenas still remain for the new wave of players to wage war over and you can still kill anyone almost anywhere. The new awakening classes only pile on more complexity to the combat system with more modern, action-based skills. Outside of PvP, there are also boss raids in the game. Sadly, to actually contribute to these things, you will need to grind as your level and weapons are what matter. Your skill will not negate a level or gear difference.

When I first played Lineage II in 2004, the game felt so alive with player interaction and drama. Even though the main problem with Lineage was the grind, it actually forced the players to interact with each other. Lineage II was THE original game to copy for Korean developers and you can still see games inspired by it today, but it also was the originator for the stigma attached to Korean games. In 2004, it may have been OK to grind for an hour to fill 10% of your exp bar when you were nowhere near max level, but I think our games have come too far for us to accept mindlessly killing monsters for hours as gameplay any longer.

Metal Assault Overview

Metal Assault is a 2D side-scroller with gameplay similar to Contra and other co-op action shooters. The game has vibrant colors and a unique art style. It uses a lobby system that allows players to join either cooperative or competitive matches. Work with other players against hordes of zombies and clear stages, or face off against one another in team based deathmatches. Metal Assault has four distinct playable characters, quests to complete, vehicles to drive, and much more.

Characters:

Carl - Well rounded character with an equal distribution in HP, MP, SP, and Speed. Great for new players.

Burton - With high HP, he makes a great front line character.

Marie - Long ranged specialist. She has low HP, but makes up for it in high damage and speed.

Ai - The scout / support character with high SP and Speed, but lower HP.

Habbo Overview

Habbo, formerly known as Habbo Hotel, is one of the early pioneers of interactive social networking. Players create unique avatars using Habbo’s detailed character customization options and enter the game world with their very own room in hotel. Every day players receive a new piece of furniture but if they want more, they’ll have to purchase it either with ‘pixels’ or ‘coins.’ Pixels are the standard currency while coins require real cash to acquire. Besides player run rooms, there are over a dozen public areas in the hotel including a lobby, several cafes with different themes, a library, gardens, and other rooms to chat in. There are two free to play multiplayer mini games to play, SnowStorm and Battle, but players will likely spend most of their time making friends and hanging out in each other’s rooms.

Dragon Saga (Dragonica Online) Overview

Dragon Saga is a unique, 3D side-scrolling MMORPG that closely resembles arcade classics like Gauntlet Legends, as well as PC Action MMORPGs like GhostX or Dungeon Fighter Online. The game used to be called Dragonica Online and was published by THQ, but since Gravity Interactive took over the service – they renamed the game to Dragon Saga. In some parts of the world the game is still called Dragonica Online. Those that are tired of traditional side scrolling games like MapleStory and Wind Slayer should find that Dragon Saga is genuinely different gaming experience; and a fun one at that. Dragon Saga is one of the best free-to-play titles of 2009, so make sure to check it out. The game’s four starting classes are:

Warrior – Warriors are the traditional ‘tank’ class in Dragon Saga. They have a large pool of hit points and are effective in melee combat but have little ranged damage.

Thief – Thieves, like in most games, are proficient at dealing damage and rely on their agility to attack rapidly in combat. Even though they can deal large amounts of damage they are vulnerable in melee combat as they have don’t have nearly as many hit points as a warrior.

Magician – The Magician in Dragon Saga is the basic spell caster of the game. They have both supportive and offensive spells and can better specialize after their first job advancement. They are extremely weak in melee range as they have the least hit points in the game.

Archer – The archer class in Dragon Saga is proficient with both bow weapons and can deal a fair amount of damage from a distance but is vulnerable in melee range. They have more hit points than a Magician but less than a Warrior.

Project Blackout Overview

Project Blackout is a lobby based online shooter. Like most free FPS games, Project Blackout is tactical shooter with a modern theme. The game was originally released in Asia as “Point Blank,” but is available through SG Interactive as Project Blackout. The game can be played in both North America, Europe, and most other regions in the world. In its core, Project Blackout plays a lot like many of the other tactical MMO shooters currently available. Anyone who has played games like Combat Arms or Cross Fire should be able to familiarize themselves with Project Blackout quite easily. Some of the game modes in Project Blackout include:

Deathmatch – Even though this game mode is called deathmatch, it’s actually a team deathmatch. Two teams fight against each other, and whichever team reaches the a predetermined amount of kills first or has the most kills when time runs out wins. Players will respawn if they die.

Demolition – The standard Counter-Strike style plant the bomb, defuse the bomb game with two teams. One team must plant C4 at the designated bomb site or wipe the other team one, while the other team must prevent the C4 from going off or simply wiping out the opposing team. Upon dying, players will not respawn until the beginning of the next round.

Sabotage – Each team must destroy the opposing team’s objective to win while defending their own objective. Players will respawn if they die.

Search & Destroy – Whichever team eliminates the opposing team wins. Upon dying, players will not respawn until the beginning of the next round.
